Ethos, Pathos, & Logos Packet

Assignment #1

Einstein appealed to the girl by trying to keep it as simple as possible. He explained to her how although scientists mainly believe in laws of nature and science, some also believe that their knowledge is not perfect and that they may believe there is a power that odes. This is based off of faith. This appeals to her logos because while he states that most scientists don't rely on prayer or faith to determine their work, there are thos that do believe that there is a greating power that can determine all laws. That puts up a good counter argument. By using ters as "humble, spirit and religious," he mildly appeals to her pathos by not just using washed-up terms that would have had no meaning behind them, but he used more personal and specific words that were more direct to her question. He does also slightly appeal to her eoths as well by stating that he too does have some doubts and question about many things, including scientific things. It will help her understand that it mainly depends on the person how nobody is perfect and knows all of the answers nor is anbody the same.

Assignment #2

The political cartoon I saw was a soldier and a scholar both holding rolled up diplomas and above them it said "I figure it's easier to find a war than a job these days." It may both appeal to and upset different viewers of the cartoon. It appeals to certain ethos because there may really be people in that same situation, which in that case it might have a little appeal to pathos. There isn't much logos due to the fact that there is only one sentence and line, which makes a counter argument almost impossible. If the scholar had had a line too, then there might have been space for a debate or argument. It's a bit one-sided I would say. The cartoon is from September 27, 2007 when George W. Bush was still in office and was implying that Bush was doing better at starting wars than he was creating jobs.

Assignment #3

Princess Diana Dies in Paris Crash

The BBC reporter informed the public of the tradgic news that day. His story tried to provide a certain sense of closure. Theer was no light way to put it, but it had to be said. It got the point across but without a personal friendliness that was much needed.

Queen Elizabeth's televised Speech
*Missing the Page*

Lord Spencer's Eulogy
*Missing the Beginning*

Lord Spencer delivered what many people could not in the situation. He comforted people by reminding them of what a great person she was. He pledged to protect her sons from the same kind of treatment that recieved so that no type of tragedy should happen again. He delievered the speech well and proved the point that even though one that is loved is lost, they will never be forgotten and will always be remembered for decades, maybe even centuries to come.

Wikipedia Entry for Princess Diana (accessed September 15, 2006)

This entry explains alot of controversial things that are going on years after the crash. It does it's job in sparking up more drama and controversy, but does the exact opposite for certain others. The certain articles that are in this entry just try to get the truth out so that the world really knows what happened so many people could have complete closure. It is directed more for an audience that didn't have an extremely personal relationship to the princess because it would cause too much hearthache for them, but more for the people who want justice with full and complete closure. On that note, the article served it's purpose depending on where you stand in the situation.

Pink Flamingo

Jennifer was very descriptive in her way of writing. She explains how quickly the fad shot across the nation. It had a great effect on people's fashion/design sense and it was widely popular.

Price worded and sculpted the sentences to fit her vision. The way she described the pink flamingos "splashing" into the market of the 1950s really helped you picture how it was such a ripple affect across the antion. The United States was, and still is, greatly affected by itself and the different cultures among intself.

Price uses quotes, examples, dates, and even stories of celebrities being affected by this outbreak of pink birds. With exact locations that you can still go to and still see the affect it all still has on us today, it becomes very influential. Also, it helps people to get the feel of hwo close those days and years actually are to us.

There may have been a subliminal message behind Jennifer's writing. By greatly describing how fast things spread and how much of an impact it had, she may have been very discretely showing us that she thinks we are too influenced by each other. That we rely too much on what others think and/or believe. On the contrary, she may have been describing it so in order to express how she feels about it in a good way. She may think that it's good that one nation has unity in such a way that they influence each other's way of acting towards each other.

All in all, she gave her view of the United States. Even though her essay wasn't directly stating how she felt, you just have to "read between the lines." By using imagery, she paints a picture. By using her style of diction, she describes things in a manner not many could fully understand.

Cabeza de Vaca & Christopher Columbus

Cabeza de Vaca

The author has a very distinguished way of writing these articles. He delivers them in a specific first person perspective in order to help us with an understading of how everything happens. He did good job of this by using the certain diction and by indicating that he is educated on the subject and knows exactly what he is talking about. It helps the viewers understand the real situation. I will explain a couple of the ways that he used in order to speak to the audience in such ways.

The author describes certain things like their weaponry by saying, "The weapons are bows and arrows, which they use with great dexterity." Also described their appearance with all of their piercing and other body art. By doing this he allowed the readers and audience to take a peak into the lives of this ancient societ. This may interest some people and historians while also giving interesting little facts that lots of people may not know about until they read this passage. It is a good choice and may appeal to plenty of people's logos.

They also describe certain customs that were in place back then and what the people were used to. For example, when a woman gets married she must take everything from her husband and bring it back to her father's house. They must bring everything. After this has taken place, the paretns may not visit the new couples house and the couple must respectively do the same. This estalishes the two separate couples in their new lives. It's a good way for the author to describe how the tribes worked in the way of getting "newly weds" out on their own. It describes how they expand, which is an important role in the growth of a civilization.

In the end, the author did a good job of describing the lifestyle of that particular section of society. It gave an insight of what the world wa really like. By being so descriptive and using such diction, while also appealing to certain ethos, pathos, and logos. They made good points and provided us with the information that many yearn for.

Christopher Columbus

The author gave us little tidbits about Christopher Columbus; jouryney through a gerat part of his travels. They included a personal letter from him to Luis de Santagel regarding his first exploration voyage. They also included a letter from Columbus to Ferdinand and Isabella about this fourth voyage. This can cause good points to come about as to why he described something the way that he did and how he did so. Good idea by the author to attempt to strike a nerve with this tactic.

The letter from Columbus to Santagel may have been a bit controversial. I say this because many people believe different things about who really discovered the new world and how. Many believe that it was the Vikings while others believe that it really was Columbus. All of this brings up good points for argument's sake. This may be a good way to appeal to certain people's logos and pathos by using actual facts that people may be passionate about. By bringing up such points he kept the audience interested to finish the article so that they could be knowledgeable and and would be able to more easily plea their case in a debate. Good decision by the author.

A good idea that the author used was to provide a second letter from Columbus to Ferdinand and Isabella about his fourth voyage. This provided a second point of a view from which Columbus could be observed. It showed his respect for both Fferdinand and Isabella by referring to them as "Your Highnesses." He explained the history he had with them and the past that they shared. The author allowed the audience to see the kind of relationship that they had but showing us this. This may play a big part in affecting how Columbus went on about his business after that.

The author proved that there were two different sides to Christopher Columbus. The had a personal side and a respective side. The author touched on a certain topci with these by using the exact letters that were used. They were set up so that you can see one side of the man and learn about that, and then see the other side and be allowed to get a little bit of a sneak peak into his side of his explorations. It helped give him credibility while allowing him to throw a personal touch a sense to it that only certain authors can do.

Iroquois Articles

The author did a good job of recording and distributing this old Iroquois tales. They used good diction to help describing the scenes and to make them believable in as much of a way as possible. They use a tone that helps best describe the different scenes in a way that not many would be able to considering they are older stories. By using certain tones and theories and different schemes the author helped paint a very important picture. I’m going to explain to you these different examples in this essay as well as give you examples of how the Iroquois story is kept on by these articles.

The first story was about the Iroquois Creation. He described the story just as it was told to him. He appealed to people who may be of some time of Iroquois decent by giving them a history of the tales of their own culture. A lot of people don’t know much about the history of their culture and this author helped do just that. How they described the different sides of the story with the Good Spirit and the Bad Spirit really captured the interest of the reader with all of it’s kind of mysterious feel to it with the whole bad versus good thing. With all of the hardships that Native Americans have experienced, it may be difficult to maneuver around those things and focus on just the actual history, which this author did a very good job of. He focused on the main points of the story by actually telling the tales that were passed down all of these generations without all of the hardships that the future held in store for them at the hands of the Europeans.

The second story is about the Pimas. It’s a story of how the chief of the tribe was afraid that when he died all of the tales, histories, and stories would be lost. The chief’s nephew went searching for somebody at a fair in New York that would take down and publish the stories of his uncle’s tribe. The author used such words as “divine, natural” and “social orders” to help the readers imagine these scenes that took place. They appealed to the audience by using evidence of these tales from actual members of the tribes. By doing this, he helped the world understand a part of the culture and society of some remote Native American tribes that not many people get a chance to experience in their lifetimes.

The last story in this essay is another tale of the creation of the earth. It describes it as an all-powerful being named “Juhwertamahkai.” Now Juhwertamahkai wanted his world to be just as he imagined it. When it didn’t turn out so great, he kept destroying it and starting over with a clean slate. The author helped put a vivid image into your mind by including the fact that he always saved the first person that he created named “Nooee.” The author seemed to tell us that he saved this particular person because they did no certain wrong. They were the first person that he created and Nooee was an almighty being in the eyes on Juhwertamahkai. The author also described how the tale states that the sun was a female and the moon was a male. The sun had a child that she did not have time to nurture so she left him in a matted down area of weeds in a mountain. The child took what it needed to live and grow strong from the earth and this child grew up to be a coyote. By including this, the author proved a point of how awesome the old Native tales could get.

The author proved how created the Iroquois could get with their folktales and how much it impacts the great society that they lead. Many of the most interesting stories are those from the ancient Natives on how life was created, started, and how things came to existence. They captured the essence of the Natives themselves in these articles and did a very well job of continuing the tradition of keeping the “histories” going.

'Is Google Making Us Stupid?'

The author’s tone has an eerie sense of precognition. It may discourage some while encouraging others. The author seems to claim a type of apocalypse in the future. He describes the future as a grim type of future that is almost completely controlled by artificial intelligence. He uses facts, quotes and many other examples from both experts and historians. I believe he made a good point and did a good job of convincing people to believe the same way that he does.

One thing that he used was when he said that he felt himself getting distracted while reading and not being as interested as he did. This may appeal to certain people on a personal level because they may feel the same way about that, or may know somebody that does. He describes it as a “remapping” or “tinkering” that he feels. As he describes these things to you, you kind of get a feeling that starts to wonder if it happens to you at all. You may even start to second guess yourself the next time you read a book or an article. This is one of the strategies that the author may have used to catch the readers interest and to get them to contemplate such things.

Another strategy that the author used what to used hard facts to prove his point. He used many different sources and different forms of people expressing themselves and agreeing with his theory. For example, by him quoting the creators of Google themselves saying, “If you had all of the world’s information directly attached to your brain, or an artificial brain that was smarter than your brain, you’d be better off,” he helped feed his theory of the future being controlled by completely by computers. His facts helped him get his point across to the audience greatly. His references that he used from the book A Space Odyssey listed an example of what he think might happen. The way the computer HAL is trying to plead with Dave Bowman to refrain from dismembering his circuitry any more than he already has. It’s sad when you think about it, a computer pleading with a human to stop it’s destruction. Acting like it has feelings and can feel pain. All of this fuels Carr’s fire.

Carr claims that people would barely have anything left of their own personality. That they would merely be shells with microchips in them being controlled by artificial intelligence. It is a depressing though, which is exactly what he wanted. He wanted to strike a bit of fear into people to get them to understand the consequences of what could possibly happen. Nobody would be themselves, as he described, and there would be no more personality in the world. It would be as if mankind hadn’t even existed. It reminds me a bit of the movie The Terminator. The author suggests that we go back to more original methods of knowledge. When the Internet and nothing of that sort existed, people had to take the labor of reading books to get the information that they needed. This would allow people to be more well-read and to know more about the real world, rather than just reading the little snippet that they want to get out of it and moving on with their lives. As much as we all love to “get in and get out,” we miss a lot of the big picture in life. It is the little things in life that often count, and if we miss those we don’t have much.

All in all, I believe that the author did his job well. He helped us picture a future of computers and technology. The way he did this was with different strategies that proved to us how much technology has helped us just as well as it has hurt us. It touched on a personal level with some, while also touching on a technical level for those who like to keep it strictly business when it comes to choosing sides in a debate or argument. He makes good points and supports his statements with good facts and gives examples and stories of how much of an impact it may have, it can have, and it already has some people.

Diction

The weeping willow weeps like the tethered dog whines.
